… once you know how-to cap metal pipe for log rocking chairs, there’s really no telling what else you may choose to cap. This is a common technique used in all forms of metal fabrication. Capping the open ends of pipe and tubing is a critical step when making just about anything from metal.

There are ten “capped” open-ends on these log rocking chairs. Four caps on the metal rockers, four on the seat and back supports, and two on the armrests. Without these caps this furniture would not be complete.

On most welding projects involving round pipe, rectangle or square tubing, its almost inevitable to have an open end some where. This is not recommended for a variety of reasons. General appearance and appeal are just one.

Step 1. Cut the Caps

No matter what size pipe or tubing, the first step is easy. Cut the caps, or parts you plan to use to weld over the open ends. For these 2″ metal rockers I use 18 gauge sheet metal cut into small octagons. The caps should be cut just enough to cover the openings, but not hang over the edges.
