As a craftsman it’s always my pleasure to find creative solutions to every home-repair challenge. And sometimes, what was a problem for one is a problem for many…
There may be many reasons log deck railings become wobbly. No matter how well made they are, with time and constant wear and tear, log deck railings may become loose or wobbly over time, causing an unsettling and sometimes unsafe condition.
Recently, I was asked to repair a wobbly log deck railing for the second time. Naturally, I was curious to find out why my original work had failed in only a few years. That’s when the homeowner explained to me that my work was being tested by far more than just your normal wear and tear.

Cutting Your Log
When fixing wobbly log deck railings using a Structural Log Bench, the most important dimension to remember is the distance between the deck railing posts. This is the same distance you will want to space your ‘log legs’ when preparing your new Structural Log Bench.
Using the dimension between deck railing posts you can easily determine how long to cut the overall log for your new Structural Log Bench.
Basic ‘Log Legs’ Welded or Unwelded
When it comes time to fix your wobbly log deck railings you have several options. The choice is up to you. Do you own a welder? Do you want arms on your new bench, a place to rest your elbow? What color should the legs be prepared?
For your convenience we offer our one-of-a-kind ‘Structural Log Leg Kits’ welded or un-welded. This includes the additional 4 leg tabs needed to fasten your new bench down to the deck.
The Strap Bracket
Using a 2″ x 1/2″ steel strap, as you see in the video above, I craft a simple ‘structural bracket’ to be fastened to both the bench and the log deck post. This strap bracket is one of the key elements to fixing wobbly log deck railings.
In the video, you will see me hammering on the brackets in my vice. To create a perfect and precise bend in these brackets, I find it easier to partially cut through the 1/2″ strap with my bandsaw, at the exact point where the straps need to be bent, rather than heating them with my torch, beating on them randomly and hoping for a good bend.
These Strap Brackets are included with your new ‘Structural Log Bench’ or ‘Structural Log Leg Kit’.
As you see, if you are looking for an easy solution to fix ‘Wobbly Log Deck Railings’, making yourself your own ‘Structural Log Bench’ and fastening it through your deck and onto your log deck posts is a real good solution, and a comfortable way to go!
